TRAIL OF TEARS Saturday, February 18, 2011 - 7:30 PM GRAEF Cooling in the Peppermint Wind BERNSTEIN Overture to Candide COPLAND Appalachian Spring
Amy Porter, flute Amy appears by arrangements with Sciolino Artist Management
The APO presents international award-winning flutist, Amy Porter performing Trail of Tears, a new commission by Grammy Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty. In the composers word; "one of the tragedies of human history is forced removal of peoples from their homeland for political, economic, racial, religious, or cultural reasons. My flute concerto is a musical journey into how the human spirit discovers ways to deal with upheaval, adversity and adapting to a new environment."
Amy Porter was praised by the Houston Chronicle stating; "she has succeeded in avoiding all the overdone playing styles of most famous flutists today. She also was an exuberant, easily extroverted performer whose enthusiasm for the music made the composition sparkle."
The APO also performs a new kaleidoscopic work for orchestra by Los Angeles composer Sara Carina Graef, based on the poetry of Shel Silverstein. In addition you will enjoy Aaron Copland's magnificent and episodic ballet Appalachian Spring and Leonard Bernstein's well known Overture to Candide. An outstanding All-American program!
