SOUND EDUCATION: SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA BROADENS CHILDREN’S MINDS
Elementary Students Circle the Globe with the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra
On May 10, 2010, the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra collaborated with the Springdale Public School District in a symphonic performance titled “Music of the World”. Led by Music Director, Steven Byess, the APO performed music of eight different world cultures such as Japan, Austria and Scotland. 3000 students filled the Springdale High school auditorium giving each student the opportunity to experience live symphonic music while at the same time introducing them to the various instruments of the orchestra.
Ashley Whittle, 14 year old violinist, was their featured soloist performing with great virtuosity “Praeludium and Allegro” by Fritz Kreisler. The Arkansas Philharmonic takes great pride in supporting the endeavors of talented young musicians.
Kaci Berry, music specialist at Willis D. Shaw Elementary commented, "What a great example of a life-long love of music for our students to see! The professionalism and world-class musicianship displayed by the Arkansas Philharmonic was extremely exciting for our students to see. The program was full of rich and exciting music, well tailored to our kids. This performance fit into my curriculum perfectly. Bravo, and well-done!! Shaw students LOVED it! Thank you!"
Maestro Steven Byess, the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra’s newly appointed music director stated, “A child’s education is not complete unless it includes the arts. The arts are a core subject of learning, and music is vital to maximizing a child’s full potential. Children have no preconceptions about art and music, and they are generally very curious.”
The Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra’s stated purpose is to “broaden and deepen appreciation of musical arts through performance and education.” The orchestra looks forward to collaborating with Northwest Arkansas parents and educators in this pursuit.
